Topic 1: The Digital Divide
This week you read Digital Divide in a Global Economy by Jack Lule
More than just a tool for information transfer, the Internet has become a conduit for a globalized workforce. However, as the Internet has become integrated into daily business life, a digital divide has emerged. Some derive the benefits from Internet access, but many others do not.
Could the digital divide change the way people think about themselves in relation to the rest of the world? Provide experiences, observations, or references to Week 6’s readings that helped shaped your opinion.
What barriers exist that make it difficult to close the digital divide in developing economies like India and China? What barriers exist in a developed country such as America?
Topic 2: Open World
This week you watched Four Principles for the Open World by Don Tapscott.
Tapscott believes that social media is becoming social production and that the Internet is a global supercomputer–every time people upload content to this supercomputer, it becomes more powerful as the new content becomes part of a global collective…a new means of production in the making. Tapscott believes that tapping into this supercomputer will allow us to innovate in ways that were not previously possible.
Locate one example that supports Tapscott’s Four Principles (Collaboration, Transparency, Sharing, and Empowerment) and share this example with your classmates (justify and support your answer).
