Japanese writer and artist Soetsu Yanagi wrote, in his book “The Unknown Craftsman”:
We must arrest the harm that is being done by the misuse of machines…I am not proposing the rejection of the machine, but I am saying that we must curb the unlimited spread of that mechanization that brings with it loss of beauty, bad products, and bad conditions of life. There are many who believe that greater mechanization improves life, but they judge from a scientific point of view, disregarding the quality and beauty of artifacts. What machine made article for home life is more beautiful than one made by hand? We must not confuse admiration for the machine itself with automatic satisfaction with its products.
Question: Do you agree with Yanagi that “the unlimited spread of…mechanization brings with it loss of beauty, bad products, and bad conditions of life?” Why or why not? Give plenty of examples to support your opinion.
